ブラウザでの表示違いを指摘されると、Netscapeの存在を思い出さずにはいられません。
Netscapeは、1990年代にインターネットの普及を大きく推進したウェブブラウザおよびその開発会社の名前で、1994年に設立されたNetscape Communications Corporationが開発した「Netscape Navigator」は、当時最も人気のあるブラウザのひとつであり、グラフィカルなユーザーインターフェースを備えていたため、一般のユーザーでも容易にインターネットを利用できるようになりました。
それまでのブラウザは、主に学術機関や技術者向けに開発されたものが多く、一般ユーザーにとっては操作が難しいものでした。しかし、Netscape Navigatorは、直感的な操作性や使いやすいデザインを採用し、初心者でも簡単にウェブを閲覧できる環境を提供。これにより、インターネットの一般普及が加速し、多くの人々がオンライン情報にアクセスできるようになったのです。
当初、Netscapeは圧倒的なシェアを誇っていましたが、1990年代後半にMicrosoftがWindowsに標準搭載する形でInternet Explorerを提供し始めたことで、ブラウザ市場の競争が激化しました。これにより、Netscapeはシェアを大きく失い、次第にその影響力を低下させていきました。特に、Microsoftが企業向けにInternet Explorerを無料で提供し、ウェブ開発の標準を独自の仕様に寄せることで、Netscapeの競争力は次第に低下していきました。
こうした状況を受け、Netscapeは1998年にブラウザのソースコードを公開し、オープンソースプロジェクトである「Mozilla」を立ち上げました。これが後のMozilla Firefoxの基盤となり、現在でもその技術は多くのウェブブラウザに受け継がれています。Netscape自身は1999年にAOLに買収され、2003年には事実上の開発終了が発表されました。そして、2008年には正式にNetscapeブランドのウェブブラウザ開発が終了し、インターネットブラウザ市場から完全に姿を消しました。
Netscapeの存在を知っている人は40代以上だと思われますが、サイト制作で苦しんだ経験しか思い出されません。なぜなら、使っていたのはInternet Explorerであり、検証用でしかなかったのですから。

In response, Netscape released its browser’s source code in 1998 and launched the open-source “Mozilla” project. This initiative later became the foundation for Mozilla Firefox, and its technology continues to influence modern web browsers. Netscape itself was acquired by AOL in 1999, and by 2003, its development was effectively discontinued. Finally, in 2008, the development of Netscape-branded browsers officially came to an end, marking its complete disappearance from the browser market.
Those who remember Netscape are likely in their 40s or older, but for many, it only brings back memories of the struggles of web development. After all, Internet Explorer was the primary browser at the time, and Netscape was merely used for testing.
