Cheating on the Common Test: Four Cases Confirmed by the Exam Center
On the 19th, the University Admissions Center announced that four cases of cheating were confirmed during the Common Test for University Admissions. The examinees involved will have all their test scores invalidated.
Reflecting on my own experience with university entrance exams over 30 years ago, back when it was called the “Center Test,” it was quite different. I took the less challenging path of private university humanities courses, which required fewer subjects. During my gap year, considering the financial burden on my parents, I decided to aim for a national university, even setting my sights on the University of Tokyo. I diligently prepared for the Center Test, only to realize that Tokyo University was far beyond my reach. While I managed to get into Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, I couldn’t find a suitable department that met the test criteria, so I abandoned the idea of a public university altogether. In the end, I graduated from a private university with a degree in the humanities—often dismissed as unhelpful for employment—but it has proven invaluable in my current career.
Having gone through this process myself, I can understand the temptation to cheat (not that I would ever condone it). However, even if someone were to gain admission through dishonest means, the guilt and regret would likely weigh heavily throughout their university life. Every year, cases of cheating come to light, but the effort spent on devising ways to cheat would be better spent learning just one more vocabulary word.
Even if there are those who manage to avoid detection, cheating is not the answer. Let’s leave dishonesty behind and strive to achieve our goals honestly.
