勉強をするのが好きな人はいるけれど、勉強したことを実践するに至らない人は多い。
過去にTOEICグループでeラーニング制作に関わっていた時、スコアアップのための勉強は一生懸命するものの、「実際に試験を受けるのが怖い」と試験を受けない人が多くいた。中には「受験料が高い」という人もいた。高い参考書は買っているのに。逃げだと思った。
大学時代の友人もそうだった。「勉強したのにスコアがでなかったらどうしよう」と、その友人はいつまでもTOEICを受けることなく派遣社員のままだった。なんで「受けないのか？」と聞くと「完璧ではないから」と。
勉強したことは仕事で使えてはじめてお金になる。勉強を金に換えられるのは教育ビジネスにいる人だけだ。
結果が出ることから逃げちゃだめだ。
TOEICなんて1回で900以上のスコアが出るのはネイティブレベルかかなり地頭がいい人だ。年取ると体力勝負のテストでもある。何度か受けていけばスコアは必ず上がる。その期間を短縮したければテクニックは必要だけど、そこで必要なのはもはや英語力ではなくビジネススキルである。
Some people love studying, but many never put what they’ve learned into practice.
Back when I was involved in creating e-learning content for the TOEIC group, I noticed that while many people studied hard to improve their scores, a large number were too afraid to actually take the test. Some said, “The exam fee is too expensive”—even though they were buying pricey study books. To me, it felt like they were just making excuses.
I had a friend in university who was the same. She kept saying, “What if I don’t get a good score even after studying?” and in the end, she never took the TOEIC at all. She remained a temporary worker. When I asked why she wouldn’t just take the test, she said, “Because I’m not perfect yet.”
Knowledge only becomes valuable when you can apply it in your work. The only people who can directly turn studying into money are those in the education business.
You can’t run away from results.
Scoring over 900 on the TOEIC on your first try is something only native-level speakers or exceptionally sharp individuals can do. As you get older, the test also becomes a battle of stamina. But if you take it a few times, your score will definitely improve. If you want to shorten that process, technique is important—but at that point, what you need is not English ability. It’s business skills.
