おそらく13歳からヤクルトスワローズ(現：東京ヤクルトスワローズ)のファンをしています。当時は広島に住んでいましたが、広島東洋カープがどうしても好きになれず、巨人の原辰徳ファンだったものの、広島で巨人ファンだというのはなんとなく肩身の狭い思いをしていたものでした。
広島も結局巨人戦は放映していたので、巨人-ヤクルトの試合はよく行われていたものの、そこでファンになったのが現ヤクルトの池山隆寛2軍監督で、「ブンブン丸」と言われた豪快なスイングに憧れたものでした。当時は関根順三監督のもと、長嶋一茂や広沢克己などが有名ではあるものの、万年Bクラスのチームでしたが、そこに野村克也監督登場、1992年にリーグ優勝、1993年には日本一になるなど劇的なチーム変革が訪れます。
その後は野村監督がいる間は優勝→Bクラスを交互に繰り返すようなチームで、若松勉監督に代わったのちは2001年に日本一になったものの、ころころと監督が代わりながら暗黒時代を迎えます。2015年に真中満監督でリーグ優勝。2019年からは高津臣吾監督に代わり現在に至りますが、勝ったり負けたりの激しいチームであることは間違いありません。高津監督は6年目を迎えますが、今年は優勝は難しいと言われているものの、そういう時に結構優勝したりするもの。うちの長男はDeNAファンなので何かと対立しますが、ヤクルトを応援するようになって37年、なんども優勝していますので、なかなか優勝していないDeNAと比べても嬉しい体験はしているのです。
今年もプラチナ会員として応燕に行きますが、いかんせんヤクルトファンの次男が中学受験なので回数が限られます。去年スタメンキッズにまた応募して当選し、山田哲人選手のサインをもらったので、今年は長岡秀樹選手のサインをもらう機会なんてあればいいなと、語り合っています。
何事も長く続けることは大事ですよと言う話です。
I’ve probably been a fan of the Yakult Swallows (currently the Tokyo Yakult Swallows) since I was around 13 years old. At the time, I lived in Hiroshima, but for some reason, I just couldn’t bring myself to like the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. Although I was a fan of Tatsunori Hara, being a Giants fan in Hiroshima made me feel a bit out of place.
Even so, Hiroshima would broadcast Giants games, so I often watched the Giants-Yakult matchups. It was during those games that I became a fan of Takahiro Ikeyama, the current 2nd team manager of the Swallows. Known as “Bun Bun Maru” for his powerful, free-swinging batting style, I admired him greatly. Back then, the team was led by manager Junzo Sekine and featured players like Kazushige Nagashima and Katsumi Hirosawa, but the team was often stuck in the B-class standings. However, when Katsuya Nomura became the manager, things changed dramatically. The team won the league championship in 1992 and became the national champion in 1993.
After that, during Nomura’s era, the team alternated between winning championships and dropping back to B-class standings. When the manager shifted to Tsutomu Wakamatsu, the team once again became the national champion in 2001. However, with frequent managerial changes, the team entered a dark period. Things took a positive turn when Mitsuru Manaka led them to a league championship in 2015. Since 2019, Shingo Takatsu has been managing the team, and here we are today. The team has always been unpredictable—winning big one season and struggling the next. Takatsu is entering his sixth year as manager, and while this year’s chances of winning the championship are considered slim, it’s in times like these that surprising victories often happen. My oldest son is a DeNA BayStars fan, so we have our friendly rivalries, but having supported the Swallows for 37 years, I’ve had many chances to celebrate championships, much more so than DeNA fans, who haven’t had the same luck.
This year, I’d love to head to the stadium as a platinum member to cheer them on, but with my younger son, a fellow Yakult fan, preparing for his junior high entrance exams, our opportunities will be limited. Last year, we applied for and were selected for the Starting Lineup Kids experience, where we got a signed ball from Tetsuto Yamada. This year, we’re hoping for a chance to get Hideto Nagaoka’s autograph, and we’ve been talking excitedly about it.
It’s important to stick with things for the long run.
